Amber is softer than a copper coin. It can be scratched by sand, by a fingernail under enough pressure, and reliably by every other stone in a jewellery box. This is not a defect to manage around — it is the reason amber feels the way it does, warm and light and unlike a mineral.
The three real dangers
What is not damage
Amber darkens across decades, deepening from honey towards cognac. Antique amber is prized for exactly this. A piece worn daily for twenty years will not look like it did in the photograph, and that is the good outcome.
